ABOUT FIRST PART OF SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH:
A large-scale sociological research project on the Ukrainian Christian community in the USA, conducted by the Sociology Department of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) at the request of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the USA, begins this week in America.
We invite all to participate in this research, the goal of which is to more fully understand the factors that influence the creation, support, and evolution of Ukrainian communities in the USA, the center of which is the church. Since the 1890s, Ukrainian Catholic immigrants have created ethnic communities and churches which help Ukrainian families acclimate to their new country. Eventually, families adapted to the new culture and the majority assimilated into American society and left their ethnic communities. The presence of new immigrants, assimilation, and sociocultural conditions are those factors which influence church attendance and its role in ethnic religious communities. At present, at the start of the 21st century the Ukrainian Catholic Church (UCC) in the USA is composed of Ukrainians and also those not ethnically Ukrainian who want to be members of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and pray together. With the help of this research, we want to study the influence of models of immigration and migration from Ukraine and other countries and also of any social aspects of the identification and role of the UCC in the United States: Why do people remain in or leave the Church? Why do non-Ukrainians choose to become Christians of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Byzantine rite? How can the Church better serve its faithful?
Why is your participation important?
- Without your agreement, openness, and readiness to talk about various aspects of emigration, adaptation, and living in the USA, and also your experience of the UCC in the United States, we will not be able to receive a more precise understanding of the factors that influence the role and mission of the UCC in the United States.
- Without your participation and openness in this research, we will not be able to determine how the UCC can better serve its faithful and local residents.
- On the basis of the results of a quantitative survey and the survey of experts, we plan to prepare a detailed report which will be available for all interested parties: UCC leaders, national and international civic organizations and foundations, and any interested persons.
What questions will be discussed during the interview?
We would like to hear your thoughts and feelings about (if appropriate): emigration and adaptation or growing up in a family of Ukrainian descent and participation in a local ethnic Ukrainian community; the importance of ethnic identity (Ukrainian or other) in your life; your experience of an ethnic Ukrainian community and, in particular, the UCC’s role in it; your thoughts on faith and religion in general; varied life experience and sociocultural or political questions which influence your choice of church membership or non-involvement; and any other information which you want to share that relates to the goal of our research. We plan to give particular attention to your experience of religious life in the United States and eagerly await your openness and desire to cooperate.
What do you need to do if you want to take part?
- We will arrange a meeting with you at a convenient time, in a convenient place.
- During this meeting, you will speak with a qualified interviewer who will ask a number of questions. One interview will last 60-90 minutes.
- At the completion of this research project, we will summarize the results and gladly send you the report, if you are interested.
Will your participation in the project be confidential?
If you agree to participate, your name will not be written down. The information which you provide, which might be chosen to be a part of the research project, will be entered into a database which will only be accessible to authorized personnel who are participating in the project (UCU sociologists). The information will be preserved electronically and used only for the purposes of research, statistics, and audit. The UCU sociologists will use the gathered information only for research, statistics, and audit. Preserving and distributing data which can in any way reveal the identity of the research participant is forbidden, inasmuch as legislation requires enhanced privacy measures. Thus, to present the results we need to structure the data through categorizing types of informants, and, as we cite an interview with you, we will mention only a few general socio-demographic parameters (age, sex, profession, etc.) without indicating the identity of the informant.
Will the information gathered during the interview be published?
The results will be published in academic journals in which the information will be accessible to interested parties, namely: leaders of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, academic institutions, any interested organizations, and the media. Recommendations based on the results of this research will be given to the Synod of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. Information on the results and educational publications will also be posted on the website of the Sociology Department of the Ukrainian Catholic University.
Are there certain specifics about your participation?
Perhaps for certain reasons you cannot speak about some aspects of your personal and social life. If you feel uncomfortable, you can refuse to respond to any question during the interview.
If I change my mind, can I refuse to give an interview?
You can refuse to give an interview any time up to and during the interview.
What will happen if I refuse?
If at any time you refuse to participate, even directly during the interview, we will destroy all information and data received from you.
How will the interview be recorded?
We will ask you to agree to record the interview on a dictaphone, inasmuch as it is important to preserve the information which you provide during the interview as precisely as possible. The information received will be preserved to maintain your confidentiality and anonymity. After the interview is recorded, the recorded file will be coded, and personal information relating to it will be in the form of codes known only to the researcher.

Дослідження української християнської спільноти у США на тему “Українські християни в США: інтеграція, соціальна приналежність і віра”
Цього тижня в Америці розпочинається масштабне соціологічне дослідження української християнської спільноти в США кафедроюсоціології Українського католицького університету (УКУ) на замовлення Української Католицької Церкви в США.
Запрошуємо Вас всіх взяти участь у дослідженні, метаю якого є більш повно зрозуміти чинники, що впливають на створення, підтримку та еволюцію українських спільнот у США, центром яких є Церква. З 1890-х рр. Українські католицькі іммігранти створили етнічні громади та церкви, котрі допомагають сім’ям українців призвичаїтись до нової країни. З часом сім’ї адаптувались до нової культури і більшість асимілювалися в американському суспільстві та відійшли від своїх етнічних спільнот. Прибуття нових іммігрантів, асиміляція та соціально-культурні умови є тими факторами, котрі впливають на відвідування Церкви та її роль в етнічних релігійних громадах. На даний час, на початку ХХІ століття Українські Католицькі Церкви (УКЦ) у США складаються з українців, а також неетнічних українців, які бажають бути членами Української Католицької Церкви та спільно молитися. За допомогою цього дослідження ми хочемо вивчити, який вплив несуть моделі імміграції та переселення з України та інших країн, а також будь-які суспільні аспекти, на ідентифікацію та роль УКЦ у Сполучених Штатах: чому люди залишаються в Церкві, або покидають її; чому неетнічні українці обирають стати християнами української католицької церкви візантійського обряду; і як церква може краще служити своїм вірним?
Чому Ваша участь важлива ?
- Без Вашої згоди, відвертості та готовності говорити про ті чи інші моменти переїзду, адаптації та проживання в США, а також вашого досвіду УКЦ в Сполучених Штатах, ми не зможемо отримати більш чітке розуміння факторів, які впливають на роль і місію УКЦ в Сполучених Штатах.
- Без вашої участі та відвертості у цьому дослідженні ми не зможемо з’ясувати, як УКЦ може краще служити своїм вірним та місцевим жителям.
- На основі результатів кількісного опитування та опитувань експертів ми плануємо підготувати детальний звіт, який буде доступний для всіх зацікавлених сторін: лідерів УКЦ, вітчизняних та міжнародних громадських організацій та фондів та будь-яких зацікавлених осіб.
Які питання будуть обговорюватися під час інтерв‘ю?
Ми хотіли б почути ваші думки та переживання про (якщо це доречно): переїзд та адаптацію чи зростання в сім’ї українського походження та участь в місцевій етнічній українській спільноті; важливість етнічної приналежності (української чи іншої) у вашому житті; ваш досвід етнічної української спільноти і, зокрема, роль УКЦ у ній; ваші думки про віру та релігію загалом; різноманітний життєвий досвід та соціально-культурні чи політичні питання, які вплинули на ваш вибір церковної приналежності чи не-приналежності; та будь-яка інша інформація, якою ви хочете поділитися, що стосується мети нашого дослідження. Ми плануємо звернути особливу увагу на ваш досвід релігійного життя в Сполучених Штатах і з нетерпінням чекаємо вашої відвертості та бажання співпрацювати.
Що Вам потрібно зробити, якщо ви бажаєте взяти участь?
- Ми організуємо зустріч з вами у зручний для вас час та у зручному місці.
- Під час цієї зустрічі ви поговорите з кваліфікованим інтерв’юером, який поставить вам ряд запитань. Одне інтерв’ю триватиме 60-90 хвилин.
- Після завершення цього дослідницького проекту ми підсумуємо результати, і з радістю надішлемо вам цей звіт, якщо вас це зацікавить.
Чи буде Ваша участь у проекті конфіденційною?
Якщо Ви погоджуєтеся взяти участь, Ваше ім’я не буде записано. Інформація, яку Ви надаєте, і та, що може бути зібрана як частина дослідницького проекту, буде внесена до бази даних, доступ до котрої буде здійснюватися тільки уповноваженим персоналом, що бере участь у проекті (соціологи УКУ). Інформація буде зберігатись на електронних носіях і буде використовуватися тільки для цілей дослідження, статистики та аудиту. Соціологи УКУ, будуть використовувати зібрану інформацію лише для досліджень, статистики та аудиту. Зберігання та розповсюдження даних, які можуть будь-яким чином розкрити особу учасника дослідження, заборонено, оскільки законодавство вимагає посилених заходів забезпечення конфіденційності. Втім, для представлення результатів нам доведеться структурувати дані через категоризацію типів інформантів, і цитуючи інтерв’ю з Вами, ми будемо вказувати лише декілька узагальнених соціально-демографічних параметрів (вік, стать, професію тощо) без прив’язки до персони інформанта.
Чи буде опублікована інформація, отримана під час інтерв‘ю?
Результати будуть опубліковані в академічних журналах, де інформація буде доступна зацікавленим сторонам, а саме: керівникам Української Греко-Католицької Церкви, академічним установам та будь-яким зацікавленим організаціям та ЗМІ. Рекомендації, отримані в результаті цього дослідження, будуть передані Синоду Української Греко-Католицької Церкви. Інформація про результати та навчальні публікації також буде розміщена на веб-сайті кафедри соціології Українського католицького університету.
Чи є якісь особливості Вашої участі?
Можливо, з певних причин Ви не можете говорити про окремі аспекти Вашого особистого та соціального життя. Якщо Ви відчуваєте незручність, то можете відмовитися відповідати на будь-яке запитання під час інтерв’ю.

Як буде проходити запис інтерв‘ю?
Ми просимо вас дати згоду на запис інтерв’ю на диктофон, оскільки важливо передати інформацію, яку ви надаєте під час інтерв’ю, максимально точно. Отримана інформація буде зберігатися з дотриманням Вашої конфіденційності та анонімності. Після запису інтерв’ю файл з записом кодується, персональна інформація прив’язується до нього лише у вигляді кодів, відомих тільки дослідникові.
